1. Gator Supersand Bond
Product Description
Supersand Bond is a novel blend of calibrated sand and polymer binders available in Ivory, Beige, Black Diamond and Slate Grey.
If you choose to work with Gator Supersand Bond, you’ll find that the product’s installation closely mimics regular paver joint sand. The only difference is in the application of water with Supersand Bond. This product becomes incredibly firm and locks between the paver joints once it sets.
This firm bond ensures pavers remain securely in place, being equally effective on both sloped and horizontal surfaces.
Gator Supersand Bond helps prevent:
- Erosion due to climatic conditions, such as freezing, rain and wind.
- Damages caused by insects.
- Weed sprouting.
Product Features
Supersand Bond:
- Does not haze paving stones.
- Can be applied a minimum of one hour after sand installation.
- Can be used for paver joints up to a maximum of 1 inch.
- Starts to set as soon as the water is sprayed.
- Sets at an above-freezing temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
Product Applications
Gator Supersand Bond is perfect for:
- Pool surroundings.
- Parking spaces.
- Sloping areas.
- Walkways.
- Driveways.
- Patios.
Product Instructions
Before installing Gator Supersand Bond, please note the following:
- The drainage base system on which the concrete pavers are installed must be composed of two layers. While the upper layer can have up to 1 inch of bedding sand, the lower layer will need to have at least 6 inches of crushed stone, which should be compacted at 98% Proctor density.
- When installing pavers on a concrete slab, never use Supersand Bond. Follow Gator Maxx preparation instructions and use Gator Maxx Sand polymeric sand instead.
- Ensure the top and side surfaces of all pavers are dry. Do not apply if the paver surface is wet or damp. A wet or damp surface will cause Supersand Bond to activate prematurely, and it will also cause polymers to stick on the paver surface.
- Ensure paver joints are not damp or wet, as this will prevent the product from properly sliding into the joints.
- Dry conditions or no rain for at least one hour and a temperature above 32 degrees Fahrenheit are imperative before installing Supersand Bond.
- Avoid immoderate flooding or watering of the paver surface.
- In regards to the areas surrounding in-ground pools, as well as all paver surfaces, there must be a slope of 1/8 inch per linear foot from the edge of the pool or structures. This slope will ensure that Supersand Bond performs optimally.
- Use mortar in joints when working with pool coping units. For the remaining paver installation around the pool, use Gator Supersand Bond.
- Do not spread or sweep product over asphalt.
- To avoid erosion, Supersand Bond must be installed a minimum of 1/8 inch below the paver surface.
- Ensure polymeric sand joints that are filled and cured are never in direct contact with tires or foot traffic.
- Fill joints up to 1/8 inch below the chamfer.
Installation Steps: Gator Supersand Bond and a New Paver Surface
To install Gator Supersand Bond on a new paver surface:
- Spread Supersand Bond with a hard-bristle broom, making sure that it fills joints.
- Leave a layer of Supersand Bond on the surface to help it consolidate into joints.
- Use a vibratory plate compactor to vibrate the bond into the paver joints. It is recommended to use a roller compactor for slab installation and a rubber pad.
- Fill joints up to 1/8 inch below the chamfer, ensuring there are no air gaps or voids in the joints.
- To ensure joints are filled, repeat steps one through three.
- Remove Supersand Bond from the paved surface — first with a hard-bristle broom, and then with a soft-bristle broom. Leave the height of the polymeric sand at least 1/8 inch below the paver’s chamfer.
- Remove all remaining Supersand Bond with a leaf blower.
Gator Supersand Bond Water Activation Steps
Depending on the temperature, work in manageable sections — or areas of about 100 square feet — at a time.
Do not enable Gator Supersand Bond to wash out of joints. During the water activation phase, the paved surface should never be allowed to dry out. Always start at the lowest section of the paved surface to begin watering and use a watering gun connected to a hose with the setting set to shower.
Gator Supersand Bond water activation steps include:
- Sprinkle water on a particular water area of about 100 square feet. Wait no longer than three minutes.
- Shower and rinse at the same time on a segment of about 100 square feet to eliminate the possibility of Supersand Bond residue left on the pavers. Any residue should go into the stone’s joints. Wait up to three minutes.
- Shower and rinse at the same time to eliminate the possibility of Gator Dust residue. Any residue should go into the stone’s joints. Stop showering when you notice water retention on the stone’s joints. Again, wait no longer than three minutes.
- Repeat all three directions mentioned above for all other areas not yet showered with water.
- Remove excess water remaining on stone crevices and pores using a leaf blower. This blowing action will help extricate any surplus Supersand Bond residue on paver surfaces from the previous steps.
Please Note
The water used in the above steps will condense Gator product in joints and activate a bonding action. It is essential to water the Supersand Bond three times, as per steps one, two and three. Too little water will reduce the final performance of Supersand Bond.
A white haze may appear on the paver surface after installation if the above steps are not executed properly. This effect occurs due to an immoderate amount of the product left on paver surfaces. Gator Clean Efflorescence Cleaner can be used to remove this haze — it will also dissipate over time. Always remember to store complete pallets outside.
Installation Steps: Gator Supersand Bond and an Existing Paver Surface
If you want to replace existing jointing materials with Supersand Bond, you will need to clean old jointing materials out of the pavers and joints before installing the product. Be mindful not to disturb bedding material underneath the pavers. Pavers and joints will also need to be completely dry.
Next, follow the Supersand Bond installation steps for a new paver surface outlined above.
