Stone veneer may look identical to genuine stone, but it consists of a few straightforward materials — Portland cement, iron oxide pigments and lightweight aggregates made of natural stone. After combining these materials, we cast them in a highly detailed mold. That mold,  originally made from genuine stones, captures all the details and texture that were on the original stones, providing unique and completely natural-looking surfaces. They’ll feel natural, too, with the rough yet detailed texture you would expect from a real stone.

One reason contractors and homeowners love stone veneer is its versatility. You can find stone veneer in:

  • Exterior facades and siding
  • Accent walls
  • Fireplaces
  • Outdoor grills
  • Columns
  • Patios

Wherever it’s in use, the stone veneer adds a bold, earthy touch to almost any space — and we do mean any space. While natural stones have some limitations for where you can use them, you can put faux stone veneer on various materials, including metal, wood-framed walls, concrete masonry unit blocks, bricks and even concrete.

Given the right treatment, you can also use stone veneer in more specialized locations, like fireplaces and pools. For example, pool chemicals can cause discoloration and fading, so stone veneer used near pools should have the appropriate sealant applied, or you should clean it promptly following any exposure to chlorine or other chemicals. When used near fire or heat, your veneer should have fire and smoke treatments applied.

The Benefits of Veneer Stone

Many people opt for stone veneer to reap the following advantages.

  • Excellent quality: With all the modern technologies afforded to us, stone veneer looks just like the real thing. Even those who have extensive experience with masonry can have a hard time telling the difference.
  • Affordability: Who among us isn’t looking for ways to keep costs down? Stone veneer is much more cost-effective than its natural counterpart. Plus, it’s lighter, so it’s easier and cheaper to ship.
  • Easy installation: In addition to being compatible with a wide range of surfaces, veneer also eliminates the need for additional footings, wall ties or foundation for a much quicker installation process. That lightweight factor also means it’s easier to pick up and put in place.
  • Suitable for curved surfaces: While natural stone is incompatible with curved surfaces, it’s possible to apply stone veneer panels to a curved surface, provided the radius isn’t too sharp. It offers far more design flexibility and makes it much easier to work with uneven surfaces.
  • No special products required: Natural stone typically requires a special stone cleaner to get all the grime off. Manufactured stone veneer only needs a little soap and water for easy cleaning. In addition, the surface is a little easier to work with since there are fewer dips and divots.
  • Durability: Stone veneer is incredibly durable and, with the right installation, will stay looking good for decades.
  • Excellent return on investment: Adding manufactured stone veneer is one of the most profitable things you can do for your home. In 2021, this remodeling project added an estimated 92.1% of its cost to the resale value of a house, making it an excellent way to recoup almost every penny that you put into it.

Whatever you’re looking for in your stone veneer, using the right materials can make all the difference, which is why many contractors and homeowners turn to Nitterhouse Masonry.
