Nitterhouse Masonry Products offers this multi-purpose sand in four colors — Ivory, Slate Grey, Black Diamond and Beige. Gator Maxx Sand helps prevent:

  • Damages caused by insects.
  • Erosion from climatic conditions, such as rain, freezing temperatures and wind.
  • Weed sprouting.

Product Features

Capabilities and features of Gator Maxx Sand include the following:

  • Can be applied for non-drainage base systems — at least 24 hours without rain is needed after installation.
  • Can be applied for drainage base systems — a minimum of one hour without rain is needed after installation.
  • Setting within one hour of the application of water on a drainage base.
  • Sets at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, or above-freezing temperatures.
  • Is not capable of hazing concrete paving stones.
  • Applications include paver joints up to a maximum of 1 inch.

Product Applications

This product is ideal for:

  • Sloping areas.
  • Overlays.
  • Patios.
  • Walkways.
  • Driveways.
  • Pool surroundings.

Product Instructions

Before installing Gator Maxx Sand, please note the following:

  • For overlays, space 2-inch diameter drainage holes about 10 feet apart and at the slab’s lowest elevations. Fill holes with #8 stone and cover with a 1-foot by 1-foot patch of Gator Fabric GF4.4. Drilled holes should enable water that enters the bedding layer to flow out freely.
  • The top and side surfaces of pavers must be completely dry. Do not apply if the paver surface is damp, as wet surfaces will cause Gator Maxx Sand to activate prematurely.
  • Ensure paver joints are dry as well. Damo conditions will prevent the product from properly sliding into the joints.
  • Installation of Gator Maxx Sand must occur above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s also crucial that installation of the product occur with dry conditions, or no rain for at least one hour after installing in a traditional application, and no rain for at least 24 hours in overlay application.
  • In regards to the areas surrounding in-ground pools, as well as all paver surfaces, there must be a slope of 1/8 inch per linear foot from the edge of the pool or structures. This slope will ensure Supersand Bond performs optimally.
  • Use mortar in joints when working with pool coping units. For the remaining paver installation around the pool, use Gator Maxx Sand.
  • Do not spread or sweep product over asphalt.
  • To avoid erosion, Gator Maxx Sand must be installed a minimum of 1/8 inch below the chamfer or 1/8 inch below the top of the pavers’ surface.
  • Ensure polymeric sand joints that are filled and cured are never in direct contact with tires or foot traffic.
  • For pre-finished or textured surfaces, remove all sand from the slab or paver surface before using the roller or plate compactor.

Installation Steps: Gator Maxx Sand and a New Paver Surface

To install Gator Maxx Sand on a new paver surface:

  1. Spread Supersand Bond with a stiff-bristle broom, making sure that it fills joints.
  2. Leave a layer of Supersand Bond on the surface to help it consolidate into joints.
  3. We recommend removing all the sand from the slab surface or paver before using a plate or roller compactor for pre-finished or textured surfaces.
  4. Use a vibratory plate compactor to vibrate the sand into the paver joints. It is recommended to use a roller compactor for slab installation and a rubber pad.
  5. Fill joints up to 1/8 inch below the chamfer, ensuring no air gaps or voids are in the joints.
  6. To ensure joints are filled, repeat steps one through three.
  7. Remove excess Gator Maxx Sand from the paved surface with a stiff-bristle broom and then a soft-bristle broom. Joints must be at least 1/8 inch below the paver’s chamfer.
  8. Extricate all remaining residue with a leaf blower.

Water Activation Steps for Gator Maxx Sand

Depending on the temperature, work in manageable sections. We suggest areas of about 100 square feet at a time.

Do not let Gator Maxx Sand wash out of joints. During the water activation phase, the paved surface should never be allowed to dry out. Always start at the lowest section of the paved surface to begin watering and use a watering gun connected to a hose with the setting set to shower.

Water activation steps for Gator Maxx Sand include:

  1. Sprinkle water on a particular water area of about 100 square feet. Wait up to three minutes.
  2. Shower and rinse at the same time on a segment of about 100 square feet to eliminate the possibility of Gator Maxx Sand remnants left on the pavers. Any remnants should go into the paver joints. Once again, you should wait no longer than three minutes.
  3. Shower and rinse at the same time to eliminate the possibility of Gator Dust surplus. Any residue should go into the paver joints. Stop showering when you notice water retention on the paver joints. Wait no longer than three minutes.
  4. Repeat all three directions mentioned above for all other areas not yet showered with water.
  5. Remove excess water remaining on paver crevices and pores using a leaf blower. This blowing action will help extricate any surplus Gator Maxx Sand residue on paver surfaces from the previous steps.

Please Note

The water used in the above steps will condense Gator product in joints and activate a bonding action. It is essential to water the Gator Maxx Sand three times, as per steps one, two and three. Too little water will reduce the final performance of Supersand Bond.

A white haze may appear on the paver surface after installation if the above steps are not executed properly. This haze occurs due to an immoderate amount of the product left on paver surfaces. Gator Clean Efflorescence Cleaner can be used to remove this haze — it will also dissipate over time. Always remember to store complete pallets outside.

Installation Steps: Gator Maxx Sand and an Existing Paver Surface

If you want to replace existing jointing materials with Gator Maxx Sand, you will need to clean old jointing materials out of the pavers and joints before installing the product. Be mindful not to disturb bedding material underneath the pavers. Pavers will also need to be completely dry before installing a minimum of 1 1/2 inch deep into the joints.

Gator Maxx Sand must be at least 1/8 inches below the chamfer, or erosion may occur. Polymeric sand joints that are filled and cured should never be in direct contact with tires or foot traffic.

Next, follow the Gator Maxx Sand installation steps for a new paver surface outlined above.

2. Gator XP Sand Bond

Product Description

Gator XP Sand — a unique blend of calibrated sand and polymer binders — is available at Nitterhouse Masonry Products in Ivory, Beige, Black Diamond and Slate Grey.

If you choose to work with Gator XP Sand Bond, you’ll find that the product’s installation closely mimics regular paver joint sand. The only difference is in the application of water with Gator XP Sand. This product becomes incredibly firm and locks between the paver joints once it sets.

This firm bond ensures pavers remain securely in place, being equally effective on both sloped and horizontal surfaces.

Gator XP Sand helps prevent:

  • Weed sprouting.
  • Erosion due to climatic conditions, such as freezing, rain and wind.
  • Damages caused by insects.

Product Features

Some notable features and capabilities of Gator XP Sand include the following:

  • Can be applied even if rain is expected — a minimum of one hour after sand installation.
  • Resists suction from a street cleaner.
  • Resists hazing paving stones.
  • Can be used for paver joints up to 1.5 inches.
  • Fast setting — starts to set as soon as water is sprayed.
  • Sets at an above-freezing temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Xtra Resistant: For areas where we have excess water or very steep slopes.
  • Xtra Durability: Good for high traffic areas & commercial job applications.
  • Xtra Bonding: High polymer content.

Product Applications

This product is perfect for:

  • Sloping areas.
  • Patios.
  • Streets.
  • Parking lots.
  • Walkways.
  • Driveways.
  • Pool surroundings.
  • High traffic areas.

Product Instructions

Before installing Gator XP Sand, please note the following:

  • When pavers are installed on a concrete slab, never use Gator XP Sand. Use Gator Maxx Sand instead.
  • Gator XP Sand is perfect for large or narrow joints up to a maximum of 1.5 inches.
  • For required sub-surface preparation, this product is recommended for various applications, including pavements, pool decks, parking spaces, driveways, footpaths and patios.
  • The drainage base system on which the concrete pavers are installed must be composed of two layers. The upper layer can have up to 1 inch of bedding sand, while the lower layer will need to have at least 5 inches of crushed stone. This stone should be compacted at 98% Proctor density.

Installation Steps: Gator XP Sand and a New Paver Surface

Before installing Gator XP Sand on a new paver surface, you must install borders to encase the pavers. There must be a minimum of a 1% slope of the final surface to ensure proper drainage. Activate Gator XP Sand using potable drinking water. You must start watering at the paved surface’s lowest point.

Next, to install Gator XP Sand on a new paver surface:

  1. Use concrete sand as your bedding course to accomplish the final leveling.
  2.  Install the slabs or concrete pavers.
  3. Apply the polymeric sand only when the top and side surfaces of the pavers are dry.
  4. Spread the product over the pavers.
  5. Use a stiff-bristle brush to distribute the sand evenly into the joints, filling them entirely.
  6. Compress the sand inside the joints by running a vibrating plate over the pavers in multiple directions.
  7. Repeat the above steps of spreading and compacting the sand at least two more times.
  8. Remove any excess Gator XP Sand from the paver surface using a fine-bristle broom.
  9. Ensure the sand level’s finished height is at least 1/8 inches lower than the pavers’ surface.
  10. Remove any Gator XP Sand residue from paved surfaces using a leaf blower.
  11. The next three steps involve watering. Refer to the above water activation steps for Gator Maxx Sand to employ these steps.

Please Note

The water used in the above steps will condense Gator product in joints and activate a bonding action. It is essential to water the Gator XP Sand three times, as per steps one, two and three. Too little water will reduce the final performance of Supersand Bond.

A white haze may appear on the paver surface after installation if the above steps are not executed properly. The haze can occur due to an immoderate amount of the product left on paver surfaces. You can use Gator Clean Efflorescence Cleaner to remove this haze. Otherwise, it will dissipate over time. Always remember to store complete pallets outside.

Installation Steps: Gator XP Sand and an Existing Paver Surface

If you want to replace existing jointing materials with Gator XP Sand, you will need to clean old jointing materials out of the pavers and joints with a pressure washer before installing the product. Be mindful not to disturb bedding material underneath the pavers.

Next, follow the same procedures as the method for applying Gator XP Sand on a new paver surface.
