TURFSTONE PERMEABLE CONCRETE PAVERS

A turfstone paver is a latticed paving stone that allows vegetation to grow between the voids or be filled with stones so water can flow through its cells.

Grow-through pavers allow for more rain capture, which is great for your lawn and the environment. It also reduces runoff and the chances of flooding in nearby areas.

Nitterhouse Masonry Products offers high-quality Turfstone paver stone products that are an excellent choice for numerous applications and environments. When you choose from among our selection of quality grass driveway pavers, you’ll secure a durable solution that unlocks the benefits of grid pavers for years to come.

How Do Turfstone Pavers Work?

Turfstone pavers — otherwise known as grass block — are made of high quality concrete material. The latticed, open cells allow grass or other vegetation to grow through or be filled with crushed stone. The latticed concrete shape of the pavers also provides a sufficiently durable surface — supporting up to 5,000 pounds per square inch — for flat-shoed walking or vehicle passage while keeping the ground cooler than a fully paved concrete or asphalt surface. This is because the breathable latticework and the soil work together to absorb the heat from the sun.

Because Turfstone pavers allow room for rainwater to penetrate the soil, they also naturally prevent stormwater runoff and reduce overall environmental pollution. Stormwater runoff is rainwater that comingles with asphalt, picking up debris and car oils that are then carried into nearby fields and streams. The Turfstone paver, however, allows rainwater to seep into the ground so it can return to the local aquifers. This quality makes Turfstone pavers especially beneficial for arid climates or regions where natural water supplies are scarce.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING TURFSTONE?

Whether you use them as paver driveway material, as water runoff pavers or other purposes, Turfstone products provide a firm, breathable foundation that offers a more visually appealing alternative to traditional asphalt or concrete surfaces.

Turfstone also makes grass-covered areas easier to maintain. Since Turfstone allows water to permeate into the ground, it’s the perfect choice for combatting soil erosion. This makes Turfstone an environmentally friendly paver stone solution.

These environmental benefits cannot be overstated. Stormwater runoff is a serious issue with few effective solutions. By installing concrete lattice pavers that allow grass to grow through, you’ll ensure that you’re able to capture a much greater portion of stormwater while minimizing runoff. The result will be a greener, more verdant look for your property — and less stormwater that goes to waste when you choose turf block pavers.

Turfstone Paver Applications

Turfstone pavers make excellent walkway or small parking lot solutions, especially in climates where water supply or ground soil erosion is a concern. Turfstone pavers also offer a beautiful, functional way to prevent pedestrians from tripping if the ground has a mild slope or there are low spots on the property. They’re especially beneficial for small, public gardens or trails that need a median to accommodate the passage of small vehicles or landscaping machinery — such as in city centers or outdoor suburban shopping centers.

Overall, Turfstone pavers provide an eco-friendly and functional solution for many different residential and commercial applications, including:

  • Driveways, parking areas and creek banks
  • Golf cart, bike and walking paths
  • Garden and green space trails
  • Circumstances when stormwater management is a concern
  • Areas that are susceptible to soil erosion
  • Pedestrian-only and low-volume, low-speed traffic areas
  • Areas where you want to maintain the feel of a natural environment
  • Lining ditches, slopes or swales
  • Parking crossovers or medians
  • Emergency lanes
  • Outdoor rooms or pet patios

Turfstone Paver Installation

Pavers that grass grows through or stone filled may look intricate at first glance, but they’re incredibly simple and straightforward to work with during installation. As a builder, you’ll appreciate Turfstone’s fast, easy seven-step installation process:

  • Excavating and compacting the soil subgrade: Prepare your surface area by digging into the soil. You’ll want to dig far enough to accommodate the height of the Turfstone and at least a minimum of 4″ for the gravel and 1″ of sand setting bed. If vehicles will be crossing the pavers consult with an engineer for proper depth of stone.
  • Placing and compacting the gravel base:  Lay landscaping fabric into the compacted soil subgrade. Shovel the first inch of the gravel base into the landscaping fabric and compress it. Then, lay your second layer of gravel base and repeat the compression process. Fold the landscaping fabric across the top of the gravel to prevent the gravel base from penetrating into the Turfstone pavers as traffic presses down on them.
  • Spreading and screeding the bedding sand: Lay down a sand base across the top of your covered gravel base.
  • Placing Turfstone paver stones onto the bedding sand: Mark the center of the pathway with a string. Then, lay your Turfstone pavers down the center of the string into the sand. Once lined correctly, proceed to the next step.
  • Vibrating the paver stones into the sand: Vibrate the Turfstones with a high-frequency, low-amplitude plate vibrator to help them sink into the sand bed.
  • Spreading topsoil or gravel and vibrating again: Spread topsoil or gravel into the Turfstones and repeat the vibration process. You can also mix grass seed and fertilizer into the topsoil.
  • Filling voids and vibrating again: Continue to vibrate the Turfstones until all of the voids are full. The level of the topsoil should be ½ to ¾ inches below the surface of the surrounding garden to accommodate grass growth.

Note: Permeability is a factor so consult a professional or engineer for further questions.
